Castles Of Scotland Vol Three

Episode 5

Fyvie Castle in Aberdeenshire - one part of a chain of royal fortresses, now stands as one of the most important historic buildings in Scotland. William the Lion was here in 1211, Alexander the II was granted charter here 11 years later and Robert the Bruce dispensed justice in a nearby wood.

Castle Fraser near the river Donne is one of the grandest of the Scottish towerhouses. Built between 1565 and 1635 it has all the classic details of Scottish baronial architecture. It has the air of a French chateau in which every view is different.

Episode 6

Kinloch Castle on the Hebridian Island of Rum was built in 1897 by George Bullogh, an English playboy.

The house is filled with hunting paraphernalia of exquisite detail. The building remains as a perfect snapshot of wealthy life at the turn of the century. Once known as the forbidden island, it was restricted only to a wealthy minority.

Culzean Castle on the Ayrshire coast is architects Robert Adam's final masterpiece. Over a period of 15 years between 1777 and 1792, he converted a medieval tower house into a magnificent Edwardian home, using battlements as decoration.
