The first ever Shanes Castle May Day Steam Rally was a great success with almost 10,000 spectators attending. The weather was fine, the ground was firm and everyone was happy that a major vintage steam rally was once again being held at Shanes Castle, probably the finest and most picturesque setting in Ireland for such an event.

There was a great turnout of steam engines , tractors, stationary engines, farming machinery, commercial vehicles, vintage cars and motorcycles. The principal theme was working exhibits, so there was threshing and bailing, stone breaking and road rolling and timber sawing by several types of saws.
