The commentary on this 56 minute PAL DVD is by Bill McLaren and the music is played by Tommy Newcomen
In the course of a lifetime there have been many changes on the farm. Eighty years ago most of the work was done by horses and there were few tractors. As the years passed tractors became more popular and nearly every farm had at least one. Today's farmer would find it very difficult to farm without them and tractors have become an everyday sight on modern farms. Yet when they were first developed they were seen as little more than a substitute for horses. Thanks to the efforts of enthusiasts, horses still plough the land and a tremendous amount of vintage tractors and farm machinery has been preserved and restored to good working order.
This DVD takes a look at horses and vintage tractors ploughing at the 38th Scottish Ploughing Championship and vintage tractors ploughing in the Borders. We also see sowing, harrowing and rolling in the seed near Kelso in 1961. There is a binder cutting barley, stooking and leading in the harvest at Whitmuirhaugh Farm, near Kelso. There is a threshing mill at work powered by a steam engine and a working demonstration with a threshing mill and bailer, powered by Field Marshall tractors at the Border Union Show where there is also a parade of vintage tractors and machinery.
