Aly Bain writes in the notes to his " Best of" album (Whirlie CD14) that director Mike Alexander and I " changed his life". Short of sounding like a mutual admiration society, Mike and I could say the same about Aly. Our friendship and working relationships go back more than a quarter of a century and have created other working relationships on both sides of the Atlantic. It's friendships and work that define anybody's life.

With our three (in 2009 to become four) series of Transatlantic Sessions for BBC and RTE, I think we can fairly claim to have done our bit in rescuing Scottish and Irish traditional music and American Country from their respective Aran sweater and rhinestone glitter. But it was the original Transatlantic Sessions - away on back, as Bill Munroe used to say, in 1995 - that set the benchmark and Aly, Mike and I are as proud of this DVD release all these years later as we hope you will be pleased to have it available at last. Thanks are due to BBC as copyright holder and the thirty-four singers and instrumentalists who made together seven half-hours of great music for television that has since gained historic, even legendary status.
